Author: Syed Muslim Hasany | ISBN: N/A | Format: Hardcover | Pages: 264 | Weight: 1.15 lbs | Pub. Date: 2004 | Publisher: Anwer Zaki and Sons
DESCRIPTION
Syed Muslim Hasany was born in Tonk, India in 1940. His geneology traces him back to great scholars and personalities of South Asian and Islamic history notably, Sayyid Ahmed of Rae Bareilly (Shahid). His early childhood was spent in Tonk and Delhi where the young Muslim attended elementary school. In 1947, his family was forced to leave for Pakistan during the Partition. Many of the events of the partition era remain etched in Muslim Hasany's mind and form an important aspect of his personality and can be discerned in his writings to this day.
After spending his teenage years in Lahore and completing undergraduate studies at the Punjab University, Muslim eventually settled in Karachi where he earned his Masters in Botany from the University of Karachi (1964). In Karachi, Muslim met his wife, Asjad, and together they embarked on a new chapter of their lives by immigrating to Canada in 1967. Muslim and Asjad settled in Toronto in 1969 and have since lived in the city with their three children, Bilal, Aqeel, and Aasim.
Muslim has both interests in the sciences and arts. He has two Masters degrees in Botany from Karachi University (1964) and York University (Toronto) 1976. He has also published extensively in the field of ophthalmology and works currently with the Eye Bank as a coordinator of cornea transplantation. Alongside his work in the sciences, Muslim has helped cultivate the cultural scene in Toronto since the 1970s. He has been instrumental along with other Pakistani Canadians in organizing poetry recitals (mushairas), book launches, discussion forums, and other cultural and literary events.
Muslim Hasany has recently published his own book of poetry, entitled, Mein Jahan Hun (published by Dunya e Adab Karachi). The book has been critically acclaimed by experts in the field of Urdu literature. It contains poetry in the form of ghazals and nazms that have been written by the author since immigrating to Canada. Muslim Hasany is still an avid poet and continues to participate in mushairas. He is in the process of compiling poems for his second book.

Author: Faiz Ahmed Faiz | ISBN: N/A | Format: Hardcover | Pages: 703 | Weight: 1.53 lbs | Pub. Date: N/A | Publisher: Maktaba-e-Karwan
DESCRIPTION "As a poet, Faiz began writing on the conventional themes of love and beauty, but soon these conventional themes get submerged in the larger social and political issues of the day. The traditional griefs of love get fused with the travails of the afflicted humanity, and Faiz uses his poetry to champion the cause of socialistic humanism. Consequently, the familiar imagery of a love-poet acquires new meanings in the hands of Faiz...This turning away from romance to realism is beautifully suggested in his poem (a nazm), "mujh se pehli si mohabbat meri mahboob na maang."
In the matter of diction and style, Faiz may be called the inheritor of the tradition of Ghalib. His admiration for Ghalib is also reflected in the title of his first published work, 'Naqsh-e-Faryadi', which comes straight from the opening line of the first ghazal of Diwan-e-Ghalib.
Although he has written poems in a simple, conversational style, he has a marked preference for polished, Persianised diction, the diction of the elite rather than of the commoners. But because of the universality of his thought and sympathetic vision, and because of his perfect handling of the ghazal, his poetry is read and admired in both parts of the Indian sub-continent.
Faiz is a "committed" poet who regards poetry as a vehicle of serious thought, and not a mere pleasurable pastime. He does not accept the maxim of "art for art's sake". An admirer of Karl Marx and a poet of the people, Faiz was honoured by Soviet Russia with the prestigious Lenin Award for Peace and his poems have been translated into the Russian language. His poetical collections include Naqsh-e-Faryadi (1943), Dast-e-Saba (1952), Zindan-Nama (1956) and Dast-e-Tah-e-Sang (1965)." - www.msci.memphis.edu
